World’s First Touchless Cardiac Monitor Detects Unseen Distress in Horses

Cardi/o® Makes Debut at National Equine Veterinary Conference

A groundbreaking health monitor that lets equine professionals check on their horse’s vital signs remotely is making its debut at the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) annual convention this week. Cardi/o® is the first cardiac monitor of its kind, enabling easy around the clock vitals monitoring for veterinarians and caretakers, as well as “wearable-free comfort” for the horse who may be recovering from surgery or experiencing illness.

The maker of the invention, Advanced TeleSensors (ATS), has been testing the system under the guidance of equine practitioners in a state-of-the-art equine rehabilitation center in Lincolnton, Georgia since May 2019. The company’s director of engineering, David Kramer, explains, “being able to monitor [horses] in the stalls at night and making sure there’s no medical issues is very important for the safety of the horse.” Anytime caretakers are away from their four-legged friends, they can view physiological changes in heart rate, respiratory rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and motion from a web dashboard or phone app without having to first apply leads or a sensor puck to the horse. “It essentially frees both caretaker and horse,” explains Stephanie Probasco, Director of Marketing. “Cardi/o® can optimize workflow for busy veterinarians by enhancing the level of care without adding workload to busy practitioners or additional stress to animals already enduring some type of stress.”

Entire barns can be outfitted to provide the highest level of continuous care to their residents, by connecting multiple monitors via WiFi. Advanced TeleSensors is accepting purchase orders now for product deliveries in July 2020. The company will be releasing additional products for residential care in 2020 and will be demonstrating their invention at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada next month in partnership with Infineon Technologies.
